In Teams for work or school, select your profile picture, choose your current status, then select Reset status. Use Teams on your unlocked computer and check your profile again. Teams calculates presence from activity, your Outlook calendar, and what you’re doing in Teams, such as joining a call.
01Check when Away comes back
Section linkSee whether Away appears only after you lock your computer, stop using it, or move the Teams mobile app to the background. Those are normal triggers. If Teams is open on both your computer and phone, use the desktop app and check again there. Microsoft says the device you were most recently active on determines presence.
02Check the browser’s activity permission
Section linkIf Away only appears when you leave the Teams tab, look in Teams for Web under Settings → Notifications and Activity → Presence. Turn on Keep my current status when I’m active outside of Teams on the web if you want Teams to detect that activity. Allow the permission when your browser asks, then compare your status while working in another tab.
03Escalate if it still shows Away while you’re active
Section linkIf your status stays on Away while you’re actively using Teams after a reset, note which device and client you were using and whether an Outlook event or Teams call was active. If the status seems out of step with Outlook, Microsoft provides a calendar presence connectivity test. Share the result with your IT support team if the problem persists.
