On a computer, go to Gmail Settings > See all settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses. Edit the rule and run its criteria as a search. If the message matches, check the rule’s action, then send or request a fresh matching test message.
01Test the exact message that stayed in the inbox
Section linkOpen the message and check the sender address and subject. In the filter editor, use Search to preview the criteria. If the filter specifies both a sender and a word in the subject, the message must satisfy both. If a conversation appears in search, open it and check the individual message. A reply can miss the rule even when an earlier message in the conversation matched.
02Check what the rule does with a match
Section linkEdit the filter and continue to its actions. Apply the label sorts a matching message under that label. Select Skip the Inbox (Archive it) as well if your intention is to keep that message out of the inbox. Save with Update filter. Start with a label if you are testing a broad rule and want to inspect its matches before adding an action such as Delete it.
03Test a fresh message separately from old mail
Section linkAsk for a new message that matches the rule, or send one from a test address covered by your criteria. Find that specific message and check its label and inbox status. To organize earlier messages, run the same search and review the results before applying a label or archiving them manually. A forwarding filter applies to new matching messages after you create it.
