Gmail Not Receiving Emails? Check Web Gmail First

The short answer

Open Gmail in a browser and confirm you are in the account that should receive the message. Search across Spam and Trash as well as the inbox. If the email appears on the web but is missing from the Android app, check app sync. If you cannot find it on the web, ask the sender whether they received a delivery error.

On a computer, open the advanced search options next to the Gmail search box. In the Search dropdown, choose Mail & Spam & Trash, then enter the sender’s address or a distinctive part of the subject. If the message appears in Spam and you trust the sender, use Not spam. If you find it in All Mail but outside the inbox, check for a filter that automatically archives incoming mail.

02Check where new messages go

Section link

Open Settings → See all settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses. Look for a rule that matches the sender and skips the inbox or deletes the message. Review its conditions before editing it. If you use forwarding, check whether Gmail keeps its own copy in the inbox. For a work or school mailbox, ask the administrator to check delivery if a test message still fails.

03The message is missing from Gmail on the web

Ask the sender to confirm the exact recipient address and check their own inbox for a rejection notice. Try a fresh test message from another account you control, with a subject you can search for. If test messages from different senders also fail, check the receiving Google Account’s storage. Gmail shares storage with Drive and Google Photos. Messages sent while the account is full can bounce, so ask the sender to resend after you make space.

04The message is on the web but missing from the Android app

Section link

Switch to the same account in the Gmail app and pull down in the inbox to refresh it. If new mail still does not appear, go to Menu → Settings, select the account and check Sync Gmail under Data usage. Confirm that the phone can load a webpage and update the Gmail app if an update is available. If the message is already visible in the app and only the alert is missing, check notification settings.
