Android work apps grayed out? Turn the Work Profile back on

The short answer

If several apps with a briefcase badge are grayed out while personal apps work, check whether your Work Profile is paused. Swipe down to Quick Settings and tap the work tile if it is dimmed. Then open a work app to confirm that the profile is running.

01Find a control that turns work apps back on

Look for the briefcase tile in Quick Settings; you may need to swipe down again to see all tiles. A lit work tile means the profile is running. If you do not see the tile, open the app drawer and look for the Work tab and its switch. You can also try opening a grayed-out work app and accepting the prompt to turn the profile on. The controls vary by device and launcher.

02Check the schedule if it happens at the same time

When the Work Profile is paused, its apps cannot run or send notifications. If they become unavailable around the same time each day, open Settings and look under Digital Wellbeing for Work apps schedule, if available on your phone. Review the days and hours when work apps are set to run.

03If the profile is on but an app is still unavailable

Make sure you are opening the briefcase-marked copy of the app; the personal copy can appear beside it. If the Work tab is missing, the profile will not turn on, or a work app still says access is blocked, ask your organization’s IT support to check enrollment and policy. On company-owned devices, IT can also limit how long a Work Profile may stay paused.
