Android removed permissions from an unused app? Restore what it needs

The short answer

Open Settings → Apps → the affected app → Permissions and restore the access you need. If Android keeps pausing a trusted app you use infrequently, look in that app’s info page for Pause app activity if unused and turn it off for that app.

01Check whether Android marked the app unused

Section link

Look for Unused apps in the Apps section of Settings. Android can revoke permissions when an app goes unused for a long time. It can also stop the app from running in the background or sending notifications. If the app was in regular use, check its current permissions directly before assuming inactivity caused the change.

02Restore only the permission the feature needs

Section link

Open the app’s Permissions list and choose the affected item. For example, if scanning a receipt fails, check Camera. Choose Allow only while using the app if that option fits the feature, then try scanning again. If you select Ask every time, a repeated prompt on a later use can be expected.

03Keep the exception specific to one app

Section link

If you rely on that app but open it only occasionally, look for the unused app setting in App info. The name can vary. On older phones where Play Protect manages permission resets, look for Permissions for unused apps in Play Protect. Turning off the pause or reset setting helps prevent future automatic revocation for that app. Grant any permission that was already removed in the app’s Permissions screen.
