Android App Keeps Stopping? Try These Checks Before Clearing Data

The short answer

Restart the phone and update the affected app. If it still closes, force stop it and clear its cache. Keep Clear storage or Clear data for later: those controls erase app data, unlike clearing temporary cache files.

01Check what closes and when

Section link

Open another app and note whether only the original app fails or the phone itself restarts. Record the action that triggers the crash, such as opening a particular document. A repeatable trigger gives the developer more useful information than “it does not work.” For example, if a notes app opens but closes on one note, record that distinction before resetting it. If the app stays open but online content will not load, check whether a webpage loads on the same connection. That is a different symptom from an app disappearing from the screen.

02Restart and install available updates

Section link

Restart using your phone’s power menu; the button combination varies by manufacturer. In Google Play, open your profile → Manage apps & devices and install the affected app’s available update. Check the phone’s Android update screen too. Test the original failing action after each change. Android menus vary by device, and some of Google’s troubleshooting steps require Android 8.1 or later. Use the manufacturer’s instructions if a menu is missing. A factory reset is not a first step for one crashing app.

03Force stop, then clear the right cache

Section link

Touch and hold the app icon and open App info, or find the app under Settings → Apps. Choose Force stop, then reopen it. Unsaved work may be lost when you stop an unresponsive app. If needed, open that app’s Storage or Storage & cache screen and choose Clear cache. Confirm the app name before tapping. Cache clearing removes temporary files; the next launch may be slower while they are rebuilt. It is a troubleshooting step, not a permanent cure or something to repeat after every launch.

04Protect app data before clearing storage or reinstalling

Clear storage or Clear data permanently removes the app’s stored data. Uninstalling can also erase data saved in the app. Before either action, check that important notes, downloads, game progress, or other local content have a usable backup, and that you can sign in again. Seeing an account name alone does not verify that its latest data is backed up. If you cannot verify recovery of important local data, stop here and contact the developer. Reinstalling an app and restoring its contents are separate tasks.

05Send a useful report if the crash returns

Section link

For one affected app, contact its developer through the Google Play listing. Include the phone model, Android and app versions, exact message, failing action, and checks already tried. Share screenshots with private content removed. If unrelated apps fail or the whole phone restarts, follow the device maker’s broader phone troubleshooting. Do not treat a single app’s cache as a diagnosis for the entire device.
