Check whether Windows Update is downloading, waiting for a restart, or reporting a failure. If the desktop is usable, save your work, check power and internet, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help. A percentage alone is not a reason to force the PC off.
Match the check to the stage
Section linkScroll the table sideways to see every column.
| Update state | Next check |
|---|---|
| Download fails on the desktop | Connection, storage, and exact error |
| Restart required | Save work and use the offered restart |
| Repeated installation error | Get Help and the recorded error code |
| Desktop unavailable during update | Keep power; obtain guidance for that screen |
01Write down the stage and the exact message
Section linkIf you can use the desktop, open Settings → Windows Update. Record the update name, any KB identifier, error code, and whether the status says Downloading, Installing, Restart required, or Failed. These states call for different checks. For example, a restart request means an update needs a restart to finish; it is different from a download that repeatedly fails. If the PC is already on an update screen and the desktop is unavailable, the Settings steps here cannot be used yet. Keep power connected and seek guidance for that screen before forcing a shutdown. There is no universal time limit in this guide after which every slow update is safe to interrupt.
02Check power, connection, and available storage
Section linkConnect the laptop to power. If the desktop is available, check that a webpage loads and that Windows shows a working internet connection. Open Settings → System → Storage and review available drive space. If Windows reports insufficient space, remove only recognized files that are backed up. Before another attempt, disconnect peripherals that are unnecessary for basic use, such as an unused dock or external drive. Finish file transfers and safely eject storage first. Keep the hardware needed to operate the PC connected.
03Run the official update troubleshooter
Section linkOpen Get Help from Start and search for Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow the prompts and keep its findings. The Settings route is System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run. When troubleshooting is complete, restart the PC as directed, then return to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. If a normal restart is requested, save your work first. Update and restart can be offered in the power menu when updates are ready to apply.
04Use the error to choose the next action
Section linkIf the same update fails again, copy its error code rather than repeatedly trying unrelated fixes. Microsoft’s linked troubleshooting page groups problems by error and describes further repairs. Some updates require administrator access; ask the device administrator if your account cannot install them. Back up personal files before advanced repair. Avoid deleting Windows folders, changing the registry, or disabling protection as a blanket response to a stalled percentage. Do not install another driver updater to diagnose Windows Update. For device-specific driver issues, use the hardware maker’s official support instructions.
05Escalate with a compact failure record
Section linkGive Microsoft support or your IT team the Windows version, update name and KB identifier if shown, error code, failure stage, storage warning if any, and troubleshooter result. Explain whether the PC reaches the desktop or remains on an update screen. On an organization-managed PC, ask IT before changing update services or policies. If the same failure returns after the documented checks, this record gives support a clear next step without assuming that an erase or reinstall is necessary.
