Google Photos Not Backing Up? Check One Missing Photo

The short answer

Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture to check the backup status and account. If the queue is paused, connect to Wi-Fi and check the account’s free storage. If the app says Backup complete but an item is missing, check its folder on Android or the app’s photo access on iPhone.

In Google Photos, tap your profile picture and open Photos settings > Backup. Confirm that Backup is on and check which Google Account receives the uploads. Connect to Wi-Fi if the app is waiting for a connection. If it reports insufficient storage, check the Google Account quota shared by Google Photos, Drive and Gmail.

02If Android only backs up camera photos

Open Collections > On this device and find the missing item. Go to Photos settings > Backup > Back up device folders and enable the specific folder, such as the folder holding WhatsApp images. Select only the folders you want uploaded to your Google Account.

03If iPhone skips part of the library

Section link

Check the Photos permission for Google Photos in iPhone Settings. If the app has access to selected photos only, add the missing items or grant full access if you want the entire library backed up. Plug the phone in and keep Google Photos open during the test.

04Try one item manually

Section link

Open a missing photo or video in the app and tap Back up now if available. If other items upload and this one does not, check its size and file type against Google’s requirements. Check the item’s details for the Backed up status.

05Verify the copy from a browser

Section link

Open the Google Photos website in a browser and sign in with the backup account. Find the item you tested. The phone app can show local files that have yet to upload. Confirm that the item opens in the browser before you remove its local copy.
