In the Zoom desktop app, open Settings → Video & effects → Virtual backgrounds. If the tab is missing, sign in to the Zoom web portal with the same account and check the Virtual background setting. If it is already on, sign out of the desktop app and back in. A grayed-out setting in the portal needs your Zoom admin.
01Check the setting in the web portal
Section linkIn the Zoom web portal, open Settings → Meeting and look under In Meeting (Advanced). Turn on Virtual background if you can change it. If it is grayed out, ask your Zoom admin to check the group or account setting. If the tab is still missing after you sign back in to the app, check that your app version meets Zoom’s current minimum and that your device supports the mode you need.
02Try a built-in still image first
Section linkIn the desktop app, select a built-in image. If it appears in the preview, the basic feature works. If the only missing option is video, check whether video backgrounds are allowed in the portal and compare your computer with the video requirements. If only your own upload fails, try a supported PNG or JPEG image within Zoom’s size limit.
03Use a green screen only if you have one
Section linkChoose I have a green screen if you actually have a solid-colored screen or backdrop. Check the requirements for that mode separately. Zoom does not support backgrounds without a green screen in the desktop app running inside a virtual environment. If you are on a managed virtual desktop, ask IT which modes the setup supports.
