Windows 11 PIN not available? Sign in and reset it

The short answer

On the Windows sign-in screen, select Sign-in options and try the password for the selected account if the password option is available. After you get in, reset the PIN in Settings. If you use a personal Microsoft account and see I forgot my PIN below the PIN box, you can reset it from the sign-in screen instead.

A Windows Hello PIN signs you in to this device. Your Microsoft account password is a separate credential. If Windows is asking for a BitLocker recovery key before the sign-in screen, these PIN steps will not work. The recovery key is for unlocking the drive.

02If you know the account password

Select the correct account, then choose Sign-in options and select the password option. Use the password for that account, whether it is a Microsoft account or a local account. Once you reach the desktop, open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → PIN (Windows Hello). Choose I forgot my PIN and follow the prompts. Change PIN asks for the current PIN.

03If you are still at the sign-in screen

On a personal Microsoft account, select I forgot my PIN if it is shown below the PIN box, then follow the prompts to verify your account and create a new PIN. Microsoft does not offer that sign-in screen reset for local accounts. If you have forgotten the password as well, use the official password recovery path for your account type first. On a work or school PC, ask your IT team if the options are missing or recovery is blocked.

04Confirm the new PIN before relying on it

Save your work, lock Windows, and sign in using the new PIN. If the PIN remains unavailable and none of your sign-in options work, use Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting guide. Avoid clearing the TPM or resetting the PC to solve a PIN error before you know how to get back to your files.
