How to Find a Saved Wi-Fi Password on iPhone, Windows, or Mac

The short answer

Use a device that has already joined the Wi-Fi network. iPhone, Windows, and Mac can show or copy saved passwords in their settings. This retrieves an existing saved password; it cannot reveal a password for a network the device has never joined.

On iOS 16 or later, open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the information button beside the current network, then tap Password. Authenticate with your passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID. For an older saved network, tap Edit in Wi-Fi settings, authenticate, and open that network’s information. On versions with the Passwords app, its Wi-Fi section also lists saved networks.

02Windows: show the network password

On current Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Properties. Next to Wi-Fi network password, choose Show. To check a different saved network, open Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select it, and look for Show beside the password. Older versions use Network and Sharing Center > your Wi-Fi connection > Wireless Properties > Security > Show characters. Use the route available on your Windows version.

03Mac: copy a known network’s password

On macOS 13 or later, open System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced. Find the network in the known networks list, open its More menu, and choose Copy Password. Paste it directly into the password field on your own device where possible. A pasted password is visible to anyone who can see that destination.

Check the exact network name and letter case. A router label may show the original password, while the network now uses a changed one. Likewise, a device can still store an old password. Ask the network owner for the current details before forgetting the network. On public or managed Wi-Fi, ask staff or IT; do not factory-reset a router to recover a password.
