Windows 11 display resolution greyed out? Check the screen and graphics driver

The short answer

Go to Settings > System > Display and select the affected screen. If both displays are mirroring, try Windows key + P > Extend and check Display resolution again. If the list is still greyed out or the expected choice is missing, check Windows Update and look for Microsoft Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager.

01Pick the screen that has the problem

In Display settings, use Identify to match the numbered boxes to the physical screens. Select the affected screen before opening Display resolution. Choose the option marked Recommended if it is available. If the picture is sharp and you only want larger text and buttons, use Scale in the same settings page.

02Compare mirrored and extended mode

If the same picture is on both displays, press Windows key + P and choose Extend. Select the external screen in Display settings and check which resolutions are offered now. If the desired option is available only in Extend, use that mode for separate desktops or switch back to Duplicate if showing the same content matters more.

03Check which driver Windows is using

Right-click Start, choose Device Manager, and expand Display adapters. If you see Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is using a generic driver for that adapter. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates first. If Windows Update offers no suitable driver, check the hardware maker’s support page for the exact model. Restart if prompted and revisit Display resolution.

04Compare the connection with fewer parts

If the problem affects only an external screen through a dock, try connecting it directly to the computer if both devices have compatible ports. Keep the same monitor and check the resolution list again. A choice that appears with the direct connection gives you a reason to check the dock, cable and port specifications for that display mode.
