Windows 11 brightness slider missing? Check which screen you’re using

The short answer

For an external monitor, adjust brightness with the monitor’s buttons or joystick. Windows 11 may leave out the slider for that screen. For a laptop’s built-in screen, check Settings → System → Display. If Brightness is missing there too, test the laptop without the external monitor or dock before changing drivers.

01For an external monitor, open its own menu

Look for a button or joystick under the edge or on the back of the monitor. Open the on-screen menu and find Brightness or a Picture menu. With two external monitors, adjust each on its own. The Windows slider may still be visible on a laptop with an external screen attached and control only the built-in panel.

02Test the laptop screen by itself

Save your work. If the laptop is docked or connected to a monitor, disconnect it and open the lid. Check Settings → System → Display again. If the slider returns with the laptop alone, reconnect the monitor and use its own menu for its brightness. If the slider is present in Settings, you can adjust it there even when Quick Settings does not show it.

03If the laptop slider is still missing, check the display driver

Check Windows Update for driver updates, restart if prompted, then look for the slider again. If it disappeared after a recent graphics driver update, an administrator can check Device Manager → Display adapters → your graphics adapter → Properties → Driver for Roll Back Driver. If that option is unavailable, look up the display driver for your exact laptop model on the manufacturer’s support site.

04If brightness changes while the slider stays put

On a supported built-in screen, expand Brightness in Display settings and look for options that react to room lighting or what is on screen. Turn one off at a time and see whether the brightness stays steady. These controls vary by PC.
