Unlock with your PIN, pattern, or password first. After a restart, that prompt is normal. If your fingerprint still fails on the lock screen afterward, clean the sensor area and press with the finger you enrolled. If scans got worse after you changed the screen protector, check its fit and enroll the fingerprint again.
01Check when the phone asks for your PIN
Section linkUse the PIN, pattern, or password if the Pixel just restarted or if it has stopped accepting fingerprint attempts. Once you’re in, lock the phone and try the fingerprint again. If the lock screen accepts it but a particular app asks you to sign in, check that app separately before changing the phone’s fingerprint settings.
02Test the sensor on the lock screen
Section linkThese screen checks apply to Pixel 6 and later models that have a sensor under the display. For a model with a sensor in the power button, follow Google’s instructions for the side sensor. On an under-display model, wipe away smudges and press and hold the same finger you enrolled. If it only fails in direct sun, shade the sensor and try again.
03Check what changed on the screen
Section linkIf the trouble began with a new screen protector, check for bubbles or debris over the sensor. Google recommends a Made for Google protector made for the exact model and size. If its packaging supplies a matching QR code, Google recommends scanning it after applying the protector and before enrolling the fingerprint. Even a compatible protector can make recognition less reliable.
04Enroll the fingerprint again and test it
Section linkMake sure you know your screen lock. Open Settings → Security & privacy → Device unlock and choose the fingerprint option. On some models it is under Fingerprint & Face Unlock. Remove the fingerprint that keeps failing, then use Add fingerprint and follow the prompts for the center, edges and tip. Test again at the lock screen. If you cannot enroll a fingerprint after updating Android, or the sensor stopped working after a screen repair, use Google’s Pixel support and tell them what changed.
