MacBook plugged in but not charging? Read the battery status

The short answer

Click the battery icon and read the status. Charging On Hold can be normal with Optimized Battery Charging. If you see Slow Charger or the battery level keeps falling, bypass any dock or display and try a compatible wall adapter and charging cable rated for your Mac.

Charging On Hold means macOS may be delaying a full charge. If you need a full battery now, choose Charge to Full Now if the menu offers it. Some versions also show when your chosen Charge Limit has been reached. Battery Is Not Charging can also appear when the connected source supplies too little power or the Mac is using more power than that source provides.

02Compare the dock with a direct connection

Save your work. Disconnect the dock or display if it normally powers the Mac. Use a working wall outlet and the adapter and cable that came with the Mac, or a compatible pair that meets its recommended wattage. Reopen the battery menu. If charging resumes, compare the original power source and cable. This points to a difference in the charging setup; it does not identify the faulty part by itself.

03Change one part at a time

For a Mac that supports USB-C charging, try a different USB-C port with the same known working adapter and cable. Then try a cable that supports charging. A cable that only transfers data will not charge the Mac. If charging works only when the cable moves, stop using that cable. For a Mac using MagSafe, use Apple’s instructions for the MagSafe version on your model.

04If it still does not charge

Quit a demanding app you can safely close and check the status again. If the battery still drops while connected directly with the recommended adapter and cable, restart and retest. Check Battery settings for Service Recommended. If the problem continues, contact Apple Support and have the Mac, adapter and cable available for evaluation.
