iPhone Not Charging? Check the Cable, Alerts, and Charge Limit

The short answer

Check the message on the screen before changing chargers. A liquid alert means disconnect the cable; a pause near the charge limit may be intentional. If there is no response, check the power connection and cable, then follow Apple’s charging and restart sequence.

01Match the symptom before you troubleshoot

A black screen, a liquid warning, and a battery that stops near its limit need different checks. Use the symptom table to pick a starting point. This guide covers cable charging on iPhone; menu names and available charging options depend on the model and iOS version.

02No response: narrow down the power connection

Section link

Use an undamaged cable and adapter with a wall outlet. Reseat the connections and try another outlet. If possible, swap the cable and then the adapter separately, checking after each change. That makes the result useful: a phone that charges with another cable gives you a different next step from one that fails with both. Look for damage or debris at the port; if you cannot clear an obstruction safely, ask for service rather than forcing the connector.

03Still a black screen: charge, then restart

Section link

Apple recommends charging for 30 minutes. If the phone still will not start, force restart it, then charge for another 30 minutes. On iPhone 8 and later, including iPhone SE of the second generation and later, quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Older models use different buttons: follow the model-specific instructions in Apple’s charging guide below. If it still will not turn on or charge, arrange service.

04Liquid alert: unplug and let it dry

Section link

Disconnect the cable from the phone and power adapter. Keep the connector facing down, gently tap the phone against your hand, and leave it somewhere dry with airflow. Wait at least 30 minutes before trying again; if the alert returns, drying can take up to 24 hours. Do not use rice, heat, compressed air, cotton swabs, or paper inside the port. If a dry Apple cable repeatedly triggers the alert, contact Apple Support.

05Stops near 80 percent: check charging settings

Section link

On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Charging and check the selected charge limit. On iPhone 14 and earlier, look under Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging for Optimized Battery Charging. Optimized charging can delay charging beyond 80 percent; a warm battery can also pause charging until it cools. Read the charging notification before changing settings. Turning off optimization is not a repair for a damaged cable or connector.

06Keep a short record if it needs service

Section link

Write down the iPhone model, the exact alert, whether another cable and adapter changed the result, and whether the phone stops near a consistent percentage. For example, “no response with either cable” is more useful than “charging is broken.” These observations help support choose the next check; they do not establish which internal part has failed.
