No sound from your Mac’s speakers? Check where audio is going

The short answer

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Output and select the built-in speakers. Turn up Output volume and make sure Mute is off. Play something in a different app. If you hear sound there, check the volume or mute control in the original app or browser tab.

01Play something outside the app that went silent

Use a song or video that you know has sound. Try it in a different app from the one that went silent. If the built-in speakers work there, return to the original app and check its player volume. In Safari, check the page’s Audio button in the search field. A website’s video player may have a separate mute control.

02Select the internal speakers in Sound settings

Section link

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound, then click Output. Select the device marked as built-in under Type. Raise Output volume and clear Mute. On older macOS versions the Apple menu may say System Preferences. Retest the same clip so you can tell whether changing the output helped.

03Disconnect accessories that can take over audio

Section link

If sound went away after you connected a display, check whether its name appears as the selected output. USB audio gear, wired headphones and wireless outputs can also appear in Sound settings. Select the built-in speakers again. If you still get silence, disconnect external audio devices and, if practical, the external display. Test again with the Mac’s own screen and speakers.

04Know when to ask Apple for help

Section link

If the built-in speakers still do not play audio from different apps after you select them, unmute them and disconnect external devices, contact Apple Support for a service assessment. Tell support whether the speakers appeared in the Output list and whether you could hear sound through headphones. Those observations help describe the fault before any repair.
