Open Settings → System → Sound. Under Output, select the speakers you want and check the volume. If the silence started after connecting a monitor or dock, switch back from the monitor’s audio output and play the same clip again.
01The speakers are listed but silent
Section linkDisconnect any wired headphones if you want to hear the built-in speakers. For external speakers, check their power, volume knob, and the connection to the audio jack. Try a short clip in another app. If every app is silent, select your speakers under Output and set Audio enhancements to Off if that setting is available. Replay the clip after each change.
02Only an app is silent
Section linkWhile the affected app is playing, open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer. Under Apps, check whether the app is muted and which output it uses. If a video plays through the speakers but a meeting app is silent, also check the speaker selected inside the meeting app.
03The speakers are missing from Output
Section linkSave your work and restart the PC, then check the list again. If the speakers still do not appear, run the audio troubleshooter in Get Help. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers. If your audio device offers Enable device, select it. If Windows still cannot find the device, use the audio driver from your PC or sound card maker’s support page for your model.
04Sound stopped after a Windows update
Section linkIf a recent update coincides with the problem, open the audio device’s Properties in Device Manager and look for Roll Back Driver on the Driver tab. Use it only if a previous driver is available, then restart and test. If built-in speakers still fail while wired headphones play the same clip, tell the PC maker that both outputs were tested. That result helps narrow the diagnosis.
