A gray Clear History and Website Data button can mean Safari has nothing to clear or that Screen Time restricts web content. Look for an entry in Safari’s History or Website Data before you change a setting.
01Check what Safari still has
Section linkOpen Safari and look in History. Then check Settings → Apps → Safari → Advanced → Website Data. History records pages you visited, while Website Data can include cookies and cached files. If both lists are empty, there may be nothing left to remove.
02Check who manages web access
Section linkIf you can see history or site data but the button stays gray, check the web content controls in Screen Time. On a child’s device, ask the family organizer or parent to review the setting. Depending on the version, the control can be under Web Content or in the child’s Apps & Websites restrictions. Leave intentional restrictions in place.
03Choose what to delete
Section linkWhen the button is available, open Settings → Apps → Safari → Clear History and Website Data and choose the time range. Safari keeps AutoFill information, but clearing cookies can sign you out of sites. To keep the list of visited pages and remove cookies and cache, use Advanced → Website Data → Remove All Website Data.
04Remove an individual entry
Section linkIf you only want to take a site out of the browsing history, open History in Safari. Use the More menu to select the website entry and delete it. If a control stays disabled on a device you manage even though data is visible and web restrictions are off, note which control is affected and contact Apple Support.
