If the app is already waiting on the Home Screen, touch and hold its icon and choose Prioritize Download if offered. If the App Store displays a billing or verification message, resolve that message first. A free app can still require a valid payment method.
01Try the affected app on its own
Section linkFor an app you already have, open the App Store and tap your account photo or button. Open App Updates and tap Update next to the affected app. If your version shows pending updates directly on the account screen, use that list. Trying the app on its own makes it easier to see whether it starts or shows a specific error.
02Move a waiting download to the front
Section linkGo to the Home Screen, touch and hold the app icon, and choose Prioritize Download if you see it. Watch the icon for progress. If the option is missing or the download still sits there, restart the iPhone and try from the App Store again. Keep the existing app while troubleshooting if you need data stored inside it.
03Follow the message on the screen
Section linkA message about a previous purchase or required verification points you to the payment issue. Follow the App Store instructions for that issue even if the app you want is free. If the store asks for age confirmation, follow that prompt. Apple says this can apply to certain apps in some countries or regions.
04Separate an app problem from a store problem
Section linkCheck whether another app you already use can update. If it can, open the affected app’s product page and look for any requirement or message specific to that app. If several apps fail after a restart and any account prompts have been resolved, contact Apple Support. Note whether new downloads, updates, or both are affected, and write down the exact message you saw.
