While connected, open Google Drive in a regular Chrome or Edge window. Enable the Google Docs Offline extension and turn on Offline in Drive settings. Open the document, enable File → Make available offline if it is not checked, and check See document status beside the title before disconnecting.
01Set it up in the browser profile you will use
Section linkUse an up-to-date Chrome or Edge browser with enough free space on the computer. Private or incognito windows do not support this feature. Open Drive settings and enable Offline while online. If the browser prompts you, install or enable the Google Docs Offline extension. Offline is tied to the browser profile and Google account you use for setup.
02Check that the specific document is ready
Section linkGoogle may save recent files automatically, but do not rely on that for an older or important file. Open it, enable File → Make available offline if it is not checked, and check the cloud icon beside the title for its status. If Google shows why the file is not ready, resolve that message before you leave your connection. To see what is already saved, use Ready for offline → Offline preview in Drive. You can also try opening a spare document you marked for offline use after disconnecting.
03If the offline option is blocked
Section linkIf Google says another user has already enabled offline access, use a separate Chrome or Edge profile for the other account. Google allows only one account with offline access per browser profile. If the message says your administrator disabled offline sync, contact your work or school administrator. A different browser profile will not change that account policy.
04If edits are not syncing
Section linkReconnect in the profile where you made the edits and check the document status. Preserve any unsynced text you can still see before clearing site data or turning offline access off. If the document is fully saved online but still fails to sync for offline use, toggle Make available offline for that file and check its status again. If the problem persists on a large document, Google suggests splitting it into smaller documents.
