Android Mobile Data Not Working? Test With Wi-Fi Off

The short answer

Turn off Wi-Fi, turn on mobile data and open a new web page. If it fails, check that the SIM or eSIM with an active data plan is enabled and selected for data. If there is no data indicator, try another location. If an indicator appears but several apps still fail, check your phone’s data limit and your carrier’s allowance.

01Test the mobile connection on its own

Keep Wi-Fi off and try a browser and another app. If only one app fails, focus on that app’s settings and service. If both fail, toggle Airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds and turn it off. Wait for the phone to reconnect before testing again.

02Check which SIM carries data

On Pixel, go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs. Make sure Mobile data is on and the intended line has Use SIM enabled. On Galaxy, go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager and check the Mobile data selection. Menu names vary by model. After a SIM change, check whether the new line is active with the carrier.

03Read the signal and check the allowance

With Wi-Fi off, look for a mobile data label such as LTE near the signal bars. If it is missing, move outdoors or test somewhere you usually have coverage. If the label is present and several apps fail, check the data usage limit in Settings and the remaining allowance with your carrier. While travelling, confirm the selected line and its roaming rates before enabling Data roaming.

04Ask the carrier before changing access point settings

If the issue persists, ask your carrier to check coverage, outages and data activation on the selected line. If they point you to the APN, use the settings they provide. On Galaxy, Access Point Names is usually under Settings > Connections > Mobile networks. Record any custom settings before restoring defaults.

05Retest and note what changed

Open a fresh page with Wi-Fi still off. If it works in another location or on a different SIM, tell the carrier where it fails and which line you tested. If the carrier confirms the line works and the problem follows the phone, ask the phone maker about mobile network troubleshooting for your model.
