Windows + Shift + S not working in Windows 11

The short answer

Open Snipping Tool from Start, choose a still-image mode, and select New. If that works, use it to capture the screen now. Then retry Windows + Shift + S and check whether the capture overlay opens and the image reaches the clipboard.

01The overlay opens, but you see no preview

Drag over a recognizable area of the screen. Open Paint and press Ctrl + V. If the new image pastes, the shortcut worked. Use Paint to save a copy if you need it now. You can also check the Screenshots folder if Snipping Tool has automatic saving enabled.

02New works, but the shortcut does nothing

Test the shortcut on the desktop. Press the Windows key on its own to see whether Start opens, then type an uppercase S in a text editor to check Shift and S. If those keys work separately, try another keyboard if one is available. Keep using New in Snipping Tool while you narrow down the shortcut problem.

03Snipping Tool cannot capture from Start either

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Find Snipping Tool, open its menu, and select Advanced options if it appears. Choose Repair, then reopen the app and try New again. If Repair fails and Reset is available, save any open snips you need before resetting. Reset clears the app’s data and preferences.

04Check both ways to capture

Section link

Take a small screenshot from New and another with the shortcut. Check the new captures by opening or pasting them. If the app still fails to open and the PC is managed by work or school, tell IT whether the app is listed, whether Advanced options is available, and whether the shortcut ever shows the overlay.
