Windows 11 clock wrong? Check the time zone and sync the clock

The short answer

Open Settings → Time & language → Date & time. If the clock is off by hours, check Time zone first. If the time zone is right but the date or minutes are wrong, turn on Set time automatically and use Sync now if it is available.

01If the hour is wrong after travel or a clock change

Compare the time zone shown in Settings with your current location. If Windows picked the wrong zone or automatic selection is unavailable, turn off Set time zone automatically and choose the correct zone from the list. If the zone observes daylight saving time and the automatic adjustment switch is available, turn it on. Leave Set time automatically on so Windows can still sync the clock.

02If you want Windows to follow your location

Automatic time zone uses Windows location services. On a personal PC, check Settings → Privacy & security → Location if automatic selection is unavailable. If you prefer to leave location services off, choose the zone manually and update it when you travel.

03If the date or minutes are wrong

In Date & time, turn on Set time automatically. Connect the PC to the internet and select Sync now under Additional settings if it is available. After it runs, compare the date and local time with a phone that is using automatic time. If sync fails, record the error and check again on a working network you are allowed to use. A working browser alone does not tell you whether the PC can reach its time source.

04If the time goes wrong again

Note whether the change follows a restart, a move to another location or a network change. Check whether the time zone changed or whether the clock drifted while the zone stayed the same. On a managed work or school PC, report the time zone, time offset and sync error to IT. A domain-joined PC can get its time from the organization’s network. For a personal PC that repeatedly loses the correct time, share the same details with the PC maker or Microsoft Support.
