iPhone Focus turns on by itself? Find what triggers it

The short answer

Open Control Center and note the name of the active Focus before turning it off. Then go to Settings → Focus and tap that name. Check its schedules first. If the same Focus switches on across your Apple devices, also check Share Across Devices in the main Focus settings.

01Match the switch to a time, place or app

Section link

Under Set a Schedule, look for a trigger that matches when the Focus came on. It might be your arrival at work or opening an app. Turn off the matching schedule if you no longer want it, then repeat that same action to check the result. Leave the schedules you still use in place.

02Check Health if the active Focus is Sleep

Section link

Sleep Focus follows the sleep schedule you set in Health. Open Sleep in Health from the Focus settings when that option is shown, and compare the schedule with when Sleep switched on. Check the days and bedtime before you change anything, so you don’t accidentally change an alarm you rely on.

03Check whether a Lock Screen is linked to the Focus

Section link

If the Focus appears after you change wallpaper, touch and hold the Lock Screen until Customize appears. Check the Focus label at the bottom of that wallpaper. Switch to a Lock Screen without a linked Focus to see whether the active Focus changes. You can check this without deleting the wallpaper or the Focus.

04Isolate sharing across devices

Section link

An iPad or Mac signed in to the same Apple Account can turn on the shared Focus. Temporarily turn off Share Across Devices in Settings → Focus on the iPhone, then check whether activating Focus on your other device still affects the phone. If it stops, check the other device before you restore sharing. Share Focus Status controls whether apps can tell others that notifications are silenced; it is a separate setting.
