While parked, start navigation and tap the speaker control on the route screen. Choose Sound instead of Mute or Alerts, then raise the phone volume with navigation active. If the route is still quiet, check where Maps is sending its audio.
01Check guidance volume inside Maps
Section linkOpen your profile menu in Google Maps and go to Settings → Navigation. Choose Louder under Guidance volume if the directions are too quiet. On Android, use Play test sound in the same Navigation settings to hear the current output without waiting for a turn.
02Try the phone speaker, then the car
Section linkIn Maps navigation settings, turn off Play voice over Bluetooth to test the phone speaker. On iPhone, Google also recommends temporarily turning off Bluetooth for this check. If the phone plays the voice and you want to hear it in the car, reconnect by Bluetooth, select Bluetooth as the car stereo source and enable Play voice over Bluetooth again.
03A chime points to a different check
Section linkIf you hear a chime in place of a spoken instruction, connect to the internet and keep Maps open while using a route. Google says the voice files may still be downloading or updating. For example, if the phone speaks but the car is quiet, focus on the car’s selected source. If both outputs give the same chime, give Maps time online to load the voice.
