Google Maps can give offline driving directions only when the full route stays in the downloaded area. Open your profile picture or initial → Offline maps and check that the map is there and covers the roads between your starting point and destination.
01Check the type of directions
Section linkChoose the driving option. Offline maps in the Google Maps app lack transit, cycling and walking directions. For a drive, live traffic and alternative routes require a connection. Seeing the roads on the map does not guarantee that a route is available offline.
02Download the roads between your stops
Section linkWhile connected, open Offline maps → Select your own map. Frame the starting point, destination and roads in between, then tap Download. For example, if you saved the city center but are driving from an airport outside the city, expand the area to include the airport and the connecting roads. Some regions do not offer offline downloads.
03Update a saved map before it expires
Section linkIn Offline maps, choose the expiring or expired area and tap Update while connected. You can also turn on Auto-update offline maps. If the map is missing from the list, download it again while you have a connection.
04Try the route before departure
Section linkOnce the download is ready, try requesting the driving route while stationary with Wi-Fi and mobile data off. If a short drive inside the downloaded area works but your planned route fails, reconnect and check whether any part of your trip runs outside the area you saved.
