Search Gmail for in:archive to find archived messages. If you remember a word from the email, add it after the operator. Open the result to read it, or select it and click Move to Inbox to put it back.
01Start with the archive search
Section linkIn Gmail on the web, enter in:archive receipt to look for an archived message that mentions receipt. Replace receipt with a word you remember. You can also open More → All Mail in the sidebar, but that view includes messages still in your inbox, so it is less useful when you want only archived mail.
02If the search turns up nothing
Section linkConfirm you are in the Gmail account where the message originally arrived. Remove in:archive and search for the sender or a distinctive word from the subject. A reply can bring an archived conversation back to the inbox. If the regular search still finds nothing, try in:anywhere receipt to include Spam and Trash.
03Move only the message you want back
Section linkSelect the matching message and click Move to Inbox in the toolbar. If you just need to read or refer to the message, you can leave it archived. Archiving removes it from the inbox without deleting it.
