Open Chrome on your computer and go to More → Settings → Downloads. Turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading. Chrome should ask for a destination the next time you start a file download.
01Test a fresh download from the same profile
Section linkUse a small file from a source you trust. If Chrome asks for a destination, choose a folder you can find and confirm that the file appears there. Open Chrome’s recent download history if you lose track of the file. If you prefer the same folder every time, leave the prompt off and use Change next to the download location.
02Separate a download from a file preview
Section linkA link can open a file for viewing inside Chrome. If the browser opens a PDF viewer, use the viewer’s Download button when you want to save a copy. A page that only displays the PDF hasn’t started a download yet. Try an ordinary file download first to check the prompt.
03Check who controls the setting if it is locked
Section linkOpen Chrome’s main menu and look for Managed by your organization. If you see it, visit chrome://policy in that Chrome profile and ask your work or school administrator whether a download policy controls the prompt. A managed browser can restrict settings, so check with the administrator before changing anything else.
