How to find dismissed notifications on Android

The short answer

Open Notification history on your Pixel or Galaxy and look for the app that sent the alert. The history needs to have been on when the alert arrived. If you just turned it on, open the app that sent the alert and check its activity or inbox.

01Google Pixel

Section link

Open Settings → Notifications → Notification history. With Use notification history on, Pixel keeps a list of dismissed alerts from the last 24 hours. You can also swipe down to open your current notifications, scroll to the bottom and tap History when it appears. Tap a history entry to open the app that sent it.

02Samsung Galaxy

Section link

Open Settings → Notifications → Advanced settings → Notification history. Look for the app in the list. If the switch is off, turn it on to record future alerts. An empty list after you enable it is expected until the phone receives new notifications.

03Check whether the phone is recording

Section link

Once history is on, send yourself a test message from an app that already delivers notifications. Swipe its alert away and look for that entry in history. If your phone has a different menu, search Settings for notification history. Some Android devices lack this feature.

04Look in the app for an older alert

Section link

If the alert is outside the history window or arrived before recording was enabled, open the app and check the relevant inbox, conversation or activity screen. A cleared calendar reminder, for example, may still have a corresponding event in your calendar.
