Vertical tabs missing in Microsoft Edge? Find the layout switch

The short answer

In Microsoft Edge on a computer, open the Search tabs menu near the upper left and choose Turn on vertical tabs. If the menu says Turn off vertical tabs, the side layout is already on. In Edge on Windows, Ctrl+Shift+, is another way to toggle the layout.

01Look at the tab strip first

If your open tabs run across the top, look near the left end of the strip for the Search tabs button. Microsoft shows it as a downward arrow. Open it and choose Turn on vertical tabs. Look for the same open pages in a list down the side of the browser window.

02Try the layout shortcut on Windows

Section link

With Edge active, press Ctrl and Shift together, then press comma. Check where the tabs are before pressing it again: the shortcut switches in both directions. If the shortcut works and you prefer the old layout, press it again or choose Turn off vertical tabs.

03Check whether the browser is managed

Section link

Microsoft lists vertical tabs for current desktop Edge on Windows and macOS. On a work or school device, the VerticalTabsAllowed policy can remove the option altogether. If you can’t find the command in a managed browser, ask your administrator whether that policy is disabled for your profile.
