If the microphone button is missing from the Apple keyboard, open Settings → General → Keyboard and turn on Enable Dictation. Then open a new note, tap the text field and try the keyboard microphone there.
01If the microphone still doesn’t appear
Section linkStart with the Apple keyboard in Notes. If you use another keyboard, switch keyboards with the globe key. Also check Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control. When Voice Control is on, it handles spoken text itself. If you rely on it, use its Dictation mode. Otherwise, turn Voice Control off and try the keyboard microphone again.
02If the microphone appears but words don’t
Section linkSwitch to the keyboard for the language you’re speaking and try a short sentence. Apple processes Dictation on the device for many languages, but availability and features vary by language and region. If it works in Notes and fails in the original app, repeat the test in another text field in that app to narrow down the problem.
03Use Voice Memos to check the sound
Section linkRecord a brief memo while speaking toward the bottom of the iPhone and play it back. If it’s muffled, remove the case if it covers an opening and check for debris. If recordings and calls still sound unclear, use Apple’s microphone troubleshooting steps. A clear memo gives you a reason to check the keyboard, language and text field before seeking hardware service.
