Pixel camera won’t focus? Check distance, light and the lens

The short answer

Open the Pixel Camera app in good light and aim at a stationary subject with a clear edge. Step back, turn off focus lock if it’s on and tap the subject in the viewfinder. If the saved photo is still blurry, remove any cover over the camera and gently clean the glass.

01Compare a close shot with a shot from farther away

Use ordinary Photo mode. Try photographing a book cover at close range, then step back and tap the same lettering again. Check both saved photos. If the lettering sharpens when you step back, use the farther position. Blur around the edges of a close-up can be more noticeable on Pixel Pro models.

02Remove anything covering the camera

Take off any case, lens protector or film that overlaps the camera area. Wipe the glass with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth and repeat the same shot in the same light. Inspect the glass for cracks, scratches or moisture under the surface if the blur persists.

03Check whether the blur depends on light

If the daylight photo is clear and the low-light one is blurry, repeat the test while keeping the phone and subject still. Night Sight can help with a stationary subject in dim light. If ordinary photos stay blurry even in good light after the lens checks, restart the phone and test again. Keep a comparison photo to show Pixel Support if the problem persists.
