How to Block Website Notifications in Google Chrome

Learn how to stop intrusive website notifications and manage alert permissions in Google Chrome on your computer.

The short answer

To block website notifications in Google Chrome, navigate to Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications, where you can set the default behavior to block all requests or manually add specific websites to the 'Not allowed to send notifications' list.

01Change Default Notification Settings

You can control whether websites are allowed to ask for permission to send notifications by default. To change this setting: 1. Open Chrome on your computer. 2. Click the More (three-dot) menu at the top right and select Settings. 3. Go to Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications. 4. Choose your preferred default option: allow sites to ask, block all sites, or use quieter messaging to prevent pop-up prompts.

02Block Specific Websites

If you are receiving unwanted notifications from a specific site, you can block it individually: 1. In the Notifications settings menu, locate the 'Not allowed to send notifications' section. 2. Select Add. 3. Enter the web address of the site you wish to block. 4. Select Add to confirm.

03Manage Pop-ups and Redirects

Some intrusive alerts are pop-ups rather than system notifications. To block these: 1. Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects. 2. Find the site under 'Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects' and select Block. 3. If the site is not listed, select Add next to 'Not allowed to send pop-ups or use redirects' and enter the site's address.

04Quick Fix for Active Sites

If you are currently visiting a site and want to change its permissions immediately: 1. Click the View site information icon (usually a lock or settings icon) located to the left of the website address in the address bar. 2. Toggle the Notifications switch to off to block, or on to allow.
