Word page numbers restart after a section break? Keep them continuous

The short answer

In desktop Word, click inside the section where the numbering restarts. Open Page Number → Format Page Numbers and select Continue from previous section under Page numbering. Then check the pages on each side of the break.

01Find the section that restarts

Section link

Use Home → Show/Hide (¶) to reveal the section break. Work on the first page after the break, where the unexpected number appears. If you added the break for a landscape table, leave it in place while you correct the numbering.

02Change the numbering for that section

Section link

Open the header or footer where the number is displayed and choose Page Number → Format Page Numbers. Set the numbering to Continue from previous section and confirm. If the front matter intentionally uses Roman numerals and the main text intentionally starts at 1, keep that restart and make the change only in the later section with the problem.

03Keep Link to Previous separate

Section link

Link to Previous controls whether Word shares the contents of a header or footer with the preceding section. Leave the link as it is if you only need to change the page count. If the first page of the section has no number, inspect its header or footer separately when Different First Page is enabled.

04Check the pages around the break

Section link

For example, if the page before a landscape section ends at 7, its first page should display 8 when you continue the sequence. Check the first portrait page after the table too. If that page restarts, open the format dialog in its own section and check the numbering there.
