Word caption numbering not updating after you move a figure?

The short answer

Click in the main document and choose Home → Select → Select All. Then press F9 to update the fields. This refreshes numbers Word inserted as captions after you move or delete them. If a number stays unchanged, check whether it was typed by hand or belongs to a different caption label.

01Update the document, then check the nearby captions

Save your document first. In Word for Windows, make sure the main document text is selected when you press F9. Compare the caption before and after the moved figure. If Word is showing field codes in place of numbers, Alt+F9 switches back to the displayed results.

02Replace a typed number with a caption field

If the unchanged number was typed as ordinary text, save the descriptive part of the caption, select the object, and use References → Insert Caption. Choose the same label as the surrounding captions and put the description after the generated number. Remove the old typed caption and update the fields again. Keep Figure and Table separate if you want each to keep its own sequence.

03Check the heading style when only the chapter prefix is wrong

Section link

If the figure sequence updates but the chapter prefix is wrong, check whether the chapter headings use a dedicated heading style with multilevel numbering. In Insert Caption → Numbering, check that Include chapter number uses the same heading style under Chapter starts with style. After correcting the setup, update the fields again and check a caption on each side of the chapter boundary.
