If the Windows 11 Search panel is blank or frozen, open Task Manager, go to Details and end SearchHost.exe. Open Search again so Windows restarts the process. If Search opens and finds apps but misses a file you can see in its folder, check which locations Windows indexes.
01Restart a frozen Search panel
Section linkPress Ctrl + Alt + Delete and choose Task Manager. In Details, right-click SearchHost.exe and choose End task. Confirm if prompted, then reopen Search and try looking for an installed app. If the panel is still stuck or SearchHost.exe is missing, save your work and restart the PC.
02If Search opens but cannot find a file
Section linkOpen the folder directly and verify that the file is there. Then go to Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows and check the indexing status and locations. If the folder is excluded, adjust that folder’s coverage and try the same filename after indexing finishes. Indexing the whole PC can increase processor and battery use.
03If both checks fail
Section linkWrite down whether Search opens, whether an installed app appears and which local filename is missing. Use Microsoft’s Windows Search troubleshooting guide for further steps or share those results with your IT team on a managed PC.
