Windows 11 Rotation lock greyed out? Check the device mode

The short answer

On a convertible that supports auto-rotation, put it in tablet posture and check Settings → System → Display again. On a conventional monitor, use Display orientation to choose Landscape or Portrait. Rotation lock and Display orientation control different things.

01Check Rotation lock in tablet posture

Section link

If the built-in screen folds back, put the device in its supported tablet posture. If your model uses a detachable keyboard, detach it if the manufacturer says that is how it switches to tablet use. Windows 11 switches to tablet mode automatically on supported devices. Under Settings → System → Display, check Scale & layout for Rotation lock.

02Test the built-in screen with the lock off

Section link

If Rotation lock becomes available, turn it off to allow automatic rotation. Hold the device upright and turn it sideways. If the screen follows, put it in the orientation you want before turning the lock back on. If the switch stays unavailable in tablet posture, look up rotation support for your exact model before changing drivers.

03Set a fixed orientation on an external monitor

Section link

In Settings → System → Display, select the monitor you want to change. Under Display orientation, choose Portrait for a monitor you have physically turned upright, or Landscape for the usual wide position. A fixed orientation does not need the Rotation lock switch. If the wrong screen changes, select the intended display first and set the other one back.
