01Check that the app window is open
Section linkHold Alt and press Tab until the app you want is selected, then release Alt. If the app has several windows, pick the preview for the correct document. If the app is missing from the switcher and taskbar, check whether it is open before changing display settings.
02Move the selected window to a visible display
Section linkUse the Windows+Shift arrow shortcut for the direction of the monitor you want. If you only have the laptop screen and maximizing brings the window back, save your work while you can see it. If it stays out of sight after undocking, reconnect the previous display when available and move the window before unplugging it again.
03Match the Windows layout to your desk
Section linkOpen Settings → System → Display and choose Identify. Drag the numbered displays to match where they sit and apply the change. Under Multiple displays, check the settings for remembering window locations and minimizing windows when a monitor is disconnected. Change one option at a time so you can see what affects your setup.
04Check the display mode after undocking
Section linkIf Windows is still extending the desktop to a screen you are no longer using, use Windows+P and choose PC screen only when the built-in panel is the screen you want to keep. Switch back to Extend when you reconnect and need both screens.
