How to restore a previous version of a file in OneDrive

The short answer

On the OneDrive website, find the existing file, right-click it, and select Version history. Open the menu beside the version you want and select Restore. That version becomes the current file, so save a separate copy first if you need to keep using the latest edits.

Sign in with the account that holds the file. If you have personal and work accounts, compare the folder and file name before opening Version history. The list applies to that file. A copy saved in a different folder is a separate file with its own history.

Use the timestamps to find a version from before the unwanted edit. For a Microsoft 365 file stored in OneDrive, you can also open Version History in the Office app and view an available version in a separate window. After restoring, open the current file and check the affected content. The version that was current before the restore remains in the history list.

03If you cannot find the version

If the Windows OneDrive sync app is installed, you can also right-click the synced file in File Explorer and look for Version history. Check the website if you are unsure that you selected the cloud copy. Work or school administrators can turn off versioning, and an older version may no longer be available. If the file itself was deleted, look in the OneDrive recycle bin instead.
