Keep header rows visible in Google Sheets and repeat them in print

The short answer

In Google Sheets on a computer, select a row and use View > Freeze to choose how many rows remain visible. For printed headers, also open File > Print > Headers & footers and enable Repeat frozen rows.

01Freeze the rows you need on screen

Section link

Open the spreadsheet on a computer and select a row in the sheet. Choose View > Freeze and select the number of rows to keep visible. Scroll down and check that the header stays in place while the data beneath it moves. Freezing is for keeping data visible; it does not protect cells from editing.

02Reset the frozen area when it covers the wrong rows

Section link

If the frozen area is not what you intended, choose View > Freeze > No rows. Then use View > Freeze again and choose the row count you need. Columns have a separate freeze choice: use No columns to remove that frozen area without removing frozen rows.

03Repeat the header on printed pages

Section link

First freeze the header row or rows in the sheet. Open File > Print, expand Headers & footers, and choose Repeat frozen rows. Use Repeat frozen columns if you also need the frozen left columns on each page. Check the print preview before continuing; keeping a header visible while scrolling is not the same as enabling repetition for printing.

04Check which problem you are solving

A row that scrolls away needs the on-screen freeze setting. A header absent from later printed pages needs the repeat option in print settings. Hidden rows and grouped rows are different controls; if the header itself is missing from the sheet, inspect those controls before changing the frozen area.
