On a computer, select a suspect date and use Format > Number > Custom date and time to show the month by name. If the day and month are correct, apply that display format to the rest of the column. If they are wrong, recover the intended dates from the source before changing the format.
01Check an example against the original
Section linkPick a cell whose intended date you can confirm from the original file or record. Display its month by name. A slash-separated entry such as 04/05/2026 could mean April 5 or May 4. If the month name reveals the wrong month, Sheets already has the wrong date. Changing the display will show that same stored date in a different style.
02Choose a format for the affected cells
Section linkSelect the date column or range and open Format > Number > Custom date and time. Choose a format with the fields you need, then select Apply. A month name makes shared schedules easier to read across regions. If a cell keeps showing the original text after you apply the format, check the original value and how it was imported before treating it as a date.
03Check the spreadsheet’s locale before entering more dates
Section linkOn a computer, open File > Settings and check Locale under General. The locale affects the default date, number, and currency formats for the whole spreadsheet. If you only need to change the appearance of a column, keep that change in the column. If the whole file needs another locale, check a copy first so you can see how the change affects the other columns.
04Repair wrong values in a separate column
Section linkKeep the original text or source file so you can verify the intended day and month. If you have separate numeric year, month, and day columns, use DATE to rebuild the date in that order. For example, =DATE(2026,5,4) represents May 4, 2026. If your locale uses a different formula separator, use the separator Sheets expects. Verify the result before replacing the old column. DATE rolls out-of-range days or months forward or backward, so validate the source values first.
