Pixel split screen not working? Check the app pair

The short answer

With gesture navigation, open an app, then swipe up from the bottom and hold to open the recent apps view. Tap the icon above the app preview and choose Split screen, then pick the other app. If the option is missing for one app, start with a different app and compare.

01Open the menu from the app preview

Start both apps separately so you can find them in the recent apps view. Tap the icon above the preview of the first app, rather than opening the preview itself. If you use button navigation, use the recent apps button to reach the same view. The interface can vary by Android version and Pixel model.

02Try a different pair before changing settings

Keep one app and swap the other. If the original app has no Split screen command or can’t be added as the second app, but other pairs work, the issue follows that app on your current device or display. If none of the pairs works, check for Android and app updates, then repeat the same comparison.

03Drag the divider to resize or exit

Once both apps open together, drag the divider a short distance to give one app more room. To return to a single app, drag the divider all the way to the edge. This closes the split layout without requiring you to change either app’s settings.
