How to stop an image from moving with text in Google Docs

The short answer

In Google Docs on a computer, select the image, choose Wrap text or Break text from the controls below it, then choose Fix position on page. If you’re in a pageless document, go to File → Page setup, select Pages and click OK before choosing a fixed position.

01Pick how the text should flow

Section link

Use Wrap text for a photo that should sit alongside a paragraph. Use Break text when the image should take up its own band across the page. In line puts the image in the flow of the paragraph. If you only see options for inline placement, check the document’s page format first.

02Check what happens during an edit

Section link

In a copy of the document, add a short paragraph above the picture and watch where it sits. Fix position on page is useful for a logo or photo that should sit at a specific spot on the page. Choose Move with text when a diagram needs to follow the paragraph that explains it as the document changes.

03Adjust the position and check the page

Section link

Select the image and use Image options → All image options → Position for finer control. Use Text Wrapping in the same panel to adjust how nearby text flows. If you plan to print or export the document, check the image and any nearby caption in the print preview after you edit.
