Excel cuts off wrapped text? Adjust the row height

The short answer

Select the affected cell and confirm that Home → Wrap Text is on. Then choose Home → Format → AutoFit Row Height. If the cell is merged and lines are still hidden, drag the bottom edge of the row heading down until the text fits.

01Check that the whole value is still there

Click the cell and look at the formula bar. If the missing words are present there, fix the display before editing the text. Turn on Wrap Text in the Home tab. If you can widen the column without crowding the rest of the sheet, do that before adjusting the row. The column width determines where the lines break.

02Let Excel resize the affected row

On Windows, choose Home → Cells → Format → AutoFit Row Height. On Mac, choose Home → Format → Auto-fit Row Height. Start with the affected row rather than resizing the whole sheet. For example, if the last line of a note is hidden under a fixed row height, the row can grow while the column widths stay as they were.

03Handle a merged cell without breaking the layout

When AutoFit leaves part of a merged cell hidden, drag the lower edge of the row heading to make the row taller. Keep the merge if the sheet needs it. If you own the layout and want to remove the merge, try the change on a copy first. Once the text is visible, click another cell and check that the last line remains readable in the worksheet.
